Frank Horvat.

Frank Horvat

I took this picture in the first day of 2022, in Kyoto. It was early morning and we had just left the hotel. My hands were freezing, but thanks to the convenience of modern mirrorless cameras, it only took me two clicks to make this picture.

Usually I don’t take photos of homeless people, but in that particular case I got two reasons: first, I was from behind, so no one can see his face; second, this scene reminds me of a photograph taken by Frank Horvat in New York, in the 80’s (the second photo, from de book: “Side Walk”). Of course I’m not comparing the two images from an artistic point of view, but it’s really hard to realize that no matter what we have, what we’ve achieved as humans beings, we still live in a world where a bunch of people need to wrap themselves in old plastic bags in order to survive in the winter.
